When a Denver result near 4.0 calls for a continuous monitor
A charcoal kit answers a narrow question: what was the average in that room for those two or three closed days? A continuous monitor answers a wider one: what does the house do across weather, nights with the furnace on, and a week when nobody opened the casement windows.
Use the kit first. If the report is clearly low and you are not about to finish the basement, file it and retest on a regular schedule. If it is clearly above 4 and a second short-term test agrees, call a licensed mitigator rather than shopping for a gadget. The monitor earns its place in the middle, especially between about 3.5 and 4.5 pCi/L, and whenever two seasons disagree.
EPA’s Citizen’s Guide notes that a short-term average sitting on 4.1 pCi/L leaves real uncertainty about the year-round level. A monitor lets you see whether quiet weeks stay under the line or keep crossing it. Then confirm with a second short-term test if you need speed, or a long-term alpha-track if you can give the house a season. Do not buy a mitigation system off one afternoon spike on a display.
